10 Audiobooks for Adults That Make Summer Listening Magical

Last week, I shared a list of our favorite audiobooks for kids — perfect for summer road trips, quiet afternoons, or story time without screens. This week, I thought I’d keep things balanced and offer a tidy companion piece: a post about the best audiobooks for adults.

But here’s the thing… as soon as I opened my book spreadsheet (yes I have one and I’ll share it someday), I was overwhelmed! How do you choose between laugh-out-loud romances, spine-tingling mysteries, and cozy literary gems that feel like a warm breeze? Should I pick a genre? A narrator (Julia Whelan… but I digress)? Just one favorite author?

This is why I need a blog — so I can sort through and share the books that made me laugh, cry, gasp, or walk an extra mile just to keep listening. So today, I’m starting with a light sampler of great audiobooks for adults that I think make perfect summer listens. Just a few standouts from different genres to kick things off — and yes, I reserve the right to come back with deep dives later.

🚀 For Sci-Fi Fans

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
Narrated by Ray Porter
I LOVE THIS BOOK! I’ve listened to it at least three times, it’s a family favorite. It’s smart, funny, and surprisingly moving. Ray Porter brings so much personality to the narration, it feels like a full-cast production. And all of you will fall in love with Rocky!

The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells
Narrated by Kevin R. Free
What if a rogue security robot just wanted to be left alone to watch soap operas — but kept getting dragged into saving humans? Murderbot is your new favorite anti-hero, and the audiobook narration is full of dry wit and action. Start with All Systems Red.

💕 For Romance and Heartfelt Laughs

The True Love Experiment by Christina Lauren
Narrated by Patti Murin & Jonathan Cole
This is not the first in the “series”, but you don’t necessarily have to read The Soulmate Equation to love this book (though it’s also fun). This story follows “Fizzy” – a romance novelist – who meets a documentary filmmaker and sparks fly — but the banter and chemistry are what really shine. A sunshine read in audio form.

Funny Story by Emily Henry
Narrated by Julia Whelan (the GOAT – I would listen to her read the dictionary)
Emily Henry is consistently excellent, and Julia Whelan’s narration just adds extra heart and charm. Funny Story has a friends-to-lovers twist and small-town sweetness that makes it a perfect summer pick.

Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry
Narrated by Julia Whelan
I’ll be honest: anything by Emily Henry is going to make this list eventually. There’s just something about her characters that feels like catching up with old friends. Try not to picture Adam Driver as Hayden… I dare you…

🏠 For Literary Listeners

The Dutch House by Ann Patchett
Narrated by Tom Hanks
Yes, that Tom Hanks. His voice is warm and rich, and it completely transforms this already-lovely novel about siblings, memory, and the homes we carry with us.

Tom Lake by Ann Patchett
Narrated by Meryl Streep
Need I say more? Meryl reading Ann Patchett is like a glass of iced tea in the shade and she’s the perfect person to be the narrator here. Reflective, tender, and beautifully told. This, along with Funny Story, makes me want to spend the summer in Michigan!

🔍 For Mystery & Twist-Lovers

Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera
Narrated by January LaVoy and Will Damron
A true crime podcast meets unreliable narrator in the best way. I’m sure that this would be good as a traditional book, but this seems made for the audiobook format.

I Have Some Questions for You by Rebecca Makkai
Narrated by Julia Whelan (again!)
Another book that plays with the podcast trope, in a wonderfully effective way. Part campus mystery, part meditation on memory and justice, this one stays with you. Whelan’s narration, as always, is pitch-perfect.

Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney
Narrated by Stephanie Racine
Locked-room mystery meets eerie seaside family reunion. Think Agatha Christie meets The Haunting of Hill House. The narration builds tension beautifully — it’s twisty, atmospheric, and entirely binge-worthy.

That’s my current shortlist — though believe me, I could go on and on. (And I will. Expect future posts highlighting favorite narrators, mystery deep-dives, and maybe even a cozy corner for audiobooks that just feel like a hug.)

In the meantime, I hope this little sampler of audiobooks for adults gives you some inspiration for what to queue up next. Whether you’re traveling, relaxing, or just folding laundry with earbuds in, these stories are ready to keep you company all summer long.
