When we moved back to the U.S. last summer, our family made it a mission to visit as many county fairs near DC as we could. I grew up going to the Idaho State Fair and Farm City Night with my cousins—4H exhibits, floppy-eared bunnies, and chickens with better hair than I’ll ever have.
These days? My kids are all about the rides—especially anything that spins. We learned fast that unlimited ride wristbands are way better than trying to count tickets and divide by the number of rides and kids. Most fairs offer them online ahead of time—highly recommend.
Last year we got lucky with pig races, a capybara in the petting zoo, and a whole lot of amazing food—yes to funnel cakes, but also wood-fired pizza, empanadas, and of course BBQ. County fair food has stepped way up.
Even though we’re Virginians through and through, we loved the Montgomery County Fair—so many rides, ag exhibits, and food stalls. It runs the same week as the Prince William County Fair, which we missed last year… but not this time. We’re aiming to do both and compare.
If you’re looking for county fairs near DC to add to your summer plans—whether for the rides, the goats, or the food—I’ve rounded up a list of the best. Hope to see you out there!
